Broken Water
BROKEN WATER is a three piece band from Olympia, WA formed in August 2008 and heavily influenced by the local music scene there from the 1990’s to present. Two members of Olympia’s SISTERS (Parts Unknown Records) and one member of Congratulations make up this band. In August of 2009 they self released a two track 7 inch with DIY letterpress packaging and a 6 song demo CD. They are currently recording another 8 song release. Broken Water plans to tour the US in March and April of 2010. Here are what other musicians are saying about them:
Jared Warren of the Melvins, Big Business, and KARP: “I really like your band, nice fuckin work. Broken Water are a heavy, psychedelic band. Not in a hot desert way or even taking your shirt off in the sun while enjoying drugs way. You are definitely wearing a coat. Your fingers are numb, your feet are wet, and it’s been dark for a very long time. Then you come home and warm up next to a wood stove. Broken Water is the soundtrack for watching large icicles fall from high places. That’s a heavy trip.”
Wynne Greenwood of Tracy and the Plastics: “I love your record. I’ve been listening to it everyday since I got it. I feel like I’m laying on the living room carpet in early high school freaking out to new records and not knowing limits. But the teenager becomes an adult. And this record reminds me of an amazing thing that happens in that transformation. Limits have become more liberating than no-limits. This record feels like it’s not trying to get me to escape my life, but coming to sit with me in my house. It’s asking for more complicated emotions.”
Vern Rumsey of Unwound: “Besides having one of the best names in rock, Broken Water has a wall of sound that would make Phil Spector jealous… a sound that rivals My Bloody Valentine, and reluctantly Sonic Youth, but in a way that shuns Blonde Redhead… a sound that is unique: all it’s own, a sound that has no rival. Not having seen them live yet, makes me want to… and I can’t wait: a hurricane of sound that is most likely to be a hurricane of energy.”
Chris Sutton of Hornet Leg and Gossip: ” Broken Water is an aptly named band. When a mother’s water is broken, her mind rushes with anxiety, confusion, and purpose while the body prepares itself to spring forth the radiant life within. Upon an introductory listen, one is perhaps reminded of golden era Sonic Youth (Coming True comes to mind), or maybe a My Bloody Valentine devoid of its oft celebrated cynicism, or even the laconic playfulness of The Breeders (Feminism). Kanako’s confident and self assured singing dances heavily over the magma and I wish to feel what she feels (Love? Hate? Pain? Blood? All of the above?). Track 4 I am transported to a planet of destroyed guitars and reverb drenched pulses. The swirling soundscapes create a druggy haze, akin to somthing I might invibe for an alternative type of self therapy. There is no harsh realities created by mental toiling that LSD puts you through or the raw & trembling exhaustion that one might experience on mushrooms after laughing a little to much. ”
